4 | Platforms, Tools, and Media

Overview

In this session, you will examine the tools through which communication and information is exchanged using different media.  You will differentiate between the medium and the platform used to deliver the communication in that medium.  While this is by no means comprehensive, it will allow you to gain familiarity and confidence to continue to explore these tools for years to come.

Goals

After the Session, you will be able to:

  • distinguish between platforms, tools, and media.
  • collect and display information and communications using a variety of tools and media.
  • use a variety of tools and media to modify information.

Readings and Content

Watch the short video Dos and Don’ts of using Social Networks on You Tube.

The way you interact with the web is called a platform.  You may have heard the term Web 2.0. The "first" world wide web was not interactive.  We could just read or observe.  Then, the Read/Write web, or Web 2.0,  came into prominence. The way in which you can interact with the web is called a platform.

Watch these short "In Plain English" videos by Common Craft to get an idea of the variety of Web 2.0 platforms that are available for use.

Finally, watch this 15 minute video on How to Create Posts in WordPress 3.0.  This will be a useful tutorial video as you use the sandbox blogs to practice your posting.

Activities

We will focus our attention on the use of Blog sites, but these are not the only types of web tools available for you to use.

Wordpress and Blogger are two free blogging sites that are commonly used.  Two Sandbox Blogs, one in each of the platforms, were set up for practice sandbox sites.

Nothing you edit, change, post, or add to these sites can be seen by anyone but the other users in this group.  Feel free to explore and play with the features.  You can't break anything!

Explore some of these additional platforms and tools as you see fit.

Discussion

How can you use blogging or blogging tools in your personal and / or professional life?

Based on last week's discussion of differences between face to face and online communications, what etiquette or guidelines would you apply to blogging?

After looking at the variety of web tools that are available, how might you extend a project or task to include the read/write web by using one of these platforms or tools?

Homework
Part 1
Homework in this session will be to apply the new processes you learned to the Transliteracy Sandbox blogs in both Wordpress and Blogger.  In your post comment about the media you are posting and explain how using this mode of communication could help you in your job, hobby, or personal life.
Each participant should complete the following:

  • Create a new post in both the Wordpress and Blogger sandbox blogs. Each post should include the following:
  • a hyperlink link to a resource about Translitercy
  • a header photo or image
  • an embedded infographic, video, or slideshow.
  • appropriate tags for easy search and reference
  • Publish your post before the beginning of the next session.
  • Add a widget to the sidebar of each blog.
  • Comment on at least one post created by another person.
  • Change the background or header of the blog.  Play around with the options and explore the possibilities.

As an extension, if you have social media accounts, go to the Goodwin Library site and comment or interact with social media elements.
