Overview

This session will explore the components of literacy that specifically address the online and virtual worlds.  You will identify a variety of components which are involved in digital and media literacy and begin to understand how they are used individually and in concert to connect digital and media literacy to the overall concept of transliteracy.

Goals

After the Session, you will be able to:

  • identify and recognize the components of digital and media literacy.
  • interpret literacy in terms of skills and abilities.
  • summarize the relationship of digital and media literacy to transiteracy.

View the following videos from Common Sense Media:
Watch this short video What is Media Literacy? from CyberWise. You can easily replace the word "school" with "library" and it maintains significance.

Notice how it incorporates many of the concepts from the readings.

Finally, Watch Did you Know 2013 on You Tube, which was updated from previous Shift Happens videos.

Discussion

How role does media literacy play in libraries?

What were the most interesting media literacies you learned about?  How does this new information and awareness affect your professional lives?

How do libraries fit into the idea of participatory culture?

How do awareness and practice of good digital citizenship reflect on your professional responsibilities?

What challenges do you anticipate for your future work?

Homework

Part 1
Take a look at the post you did on the sandbox blog about your favorite book summary as a twitter post.  Edit the post describe at least one element of media or digital literacies that is highlighted in someway in your favorite book.  Comment on how this literacy relates to your selection of the book as your favorite.

Part 2
There are no readings or videos for the next week.

As you continue to develop your project, reach out to a colleague for any help or advice that you might need with completing it.  Think about how digital and media literacies come into play with your project and how you will incorporate good digital citizenship into its implementation.
