Activities

You will want to start to think about some personal or professional goals you would like to achieve through this program.  Begin to frame your thoughts by using a free web resource.

Use the KWL Creator from Read.Write.Think. to help you prepare for your goal setting by organizing what you Know (K), Want to Learn (W) through participation in this program, and then reflecting on what you have Learned (L) so far.

When you are done with your KWL, send it to yourself as a pdf via email.  The tool will allow you to do this at the end.  Use this chart for your goal setting exercise.

Discussion

1.  At this point in the program, you have used three common internet resources to help you gain information and comunicate:
You Tube - to watch video to learn content.SlideShare - to view a presentation to learn content.KWL Creator (Web Tool) - to create content for communication and sharing.
  • What is your experience with internet resources?
  • How comfortable are you using online or digital tools for communicating and sharing information?
  • What about these tools was the same as reading or writing in the traditional sense for acquiring information or communicating and sharing?  What was very different?

2.   Share your thoughts on the KWL Chart you created with the group.

  • Was using the tool easy?
  • Was the organization useful in helping to gather your thoughts?
  • Was the information you shared useful to you?  Do you think it will be useful to others?

3.  General thoughts and questions about transliteracy.

  • What do you think of the program so far?
  • What questions do you have about the future sessions?
  • What challenges or concerns would you like to share?
  • What was your most exciting moment of this session?

Homework

Part 1

Use your KWL Chart and your experience in the session to set some objectives for yourself for this program.  These should be personal or professional learning objectives that you will use throughout the program and to self assess your progress at the end.

If you need some help setting goals or objectives, here are some resources:

Part 2

The next session will focus on using productivity tools for online and face to face collaboration as well as individual work.  You will use the Google set of applications for this program.  Using Google will require a Google Account.
If you don't already have one, set up a Google Account using an email address you have.  It does not have to be a Gmail account.
If you already have a Google Account, you will not need to set up another one.

Review the Google Apps Learning Center resources.  Read over the material for Calendar, Drive, and Documents.
What Google applications do you currently use?  Which ones would you like to use?
