Modern society requires a new perspective on what it means to be literate. Since the advent of the internet and digital communications, new behaviors for communication and collaboration stretched our former definitions of literacy. In the wake of the digital age, the concept of transliteracy has emerged. Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from speaking and signing to handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, and extending to digital social networks. The concept extends meaning and relevance to include cultural components of history, philosophy, and literature, along with associated issues such as the use of technology and economic considerations to more far ranging global issues. Libraries have taken up the cause of transliteracy as part of their mission to promote communication and information technologies in the digital age. In this 8 week program, you will explore aspects of transliteracy that will help increase your ability to effectively communicate and share information through different media. The program will be delievered in a blended format with face to face sessions and ongoing online activities, both providing content and context for partiicpants. Online access is necessary for participation. The program will consist of online readings and activities, face to face discussions and tutorials, and follow up activities both online and face to face.
Although you do not have a computer or internet access at your home, you will need the ability to access the online portions of the program some way.

The last portion of the session will be devoted to individual question and answer and problem solving. Finally, there will be a follow up activity that will be completed online. You will be asked to develop and complete a project of your choice which will apply the skills and concepts of transliteracy that you want to improve. The project will give you opportunities to practice and apply your new skills and knolwedge in a practical way.
